Church of St. Margaret in Margečan

The first written mention of the parish church of St. Margaret is found in a record from 1431. The church has been renovated and redesigned many times throughout history. Its present appearance dates back to the 19th and 20th centuries. The history of the parish of Margareta is more systematically recorded from 1638 when the Varaždin archdeacon Petar Oškoci visited the parish. It was then discovered that the church was built on the property of the Petheö family, with wooden altars, choir loft, and pulpit.

Margečan

Margečan is a settlement within the city of Ivanec in Varaždin County. Today, around 400 residents live in the village. The parish church of St. Margaret is first mentioned in 1431, although it is likely older than that year. The church is an important part of the local history and culture.

Margečan Watermill

The watermill in Margečan is a replica of traditional watermills that used to be built in this region. The watermill has become a tourist attraction, a landmark that many eagerly photograph and which makes Margečan recognizable. It is built next to the old branch of the Bednja River. The watermill is a project of the Margečan association Margareta, which has invested hundreds of hours of voluntary work into building the watermill. 

City of Ivanec

Ivanec is a town in Varaždin County, in northwestern Croatia. It is only 11 km away from the Vinbreg Holiday Homes. The town has an interesting history and traditions, located at the foot of the Ivanščica mountain. The area around Ivanec offers numerous natural beauties, forests, streams, springs, and hiking trails. Ivanec is an excellent destination for day trips. 

Mount Ivanščica 1060m

The mountain of Ivanščica, with its 1060 meters, is the highest mountain in the Croatian Zagorje and northwest Croatia. It stretches in a west-east direction for 27 km and is up to 9 km wide. It is a very popular hiking destination that attracts more and more hikers. Its special features include vast forests, beautiful mountain meadows, and streams.

Opeka Arboretum


Just 17 km from the Vinbreg vacation homes or a 20-minute drive by car, you will find the Opeka Arboretum in Marčan, near Vinica. Its beauty and richness rank it among the top three most important arboretums in Croatia. It covers an area of 64 hectares and belongs to English-style parks.

Mountain Hut Lujček House Pokojec

The mountain lodge Lujčekova hiža is accessible from the road that leads through Belski dol, from Bela towards Podrute. The lodge is located about 1.5 km from the road, situated at the pass called Ričkov krč, between the peaks of Ham (679 m) and Rudski gupac (595 m). It is also accessible by car. The lodge is stocked with drinks and food, and is open on weekends and by appointment.

Pusta Bela - medieval fortress

Pusta Bela is the ruins of the medieval fortified town of Bela located above the Bela valley through which the road Bela - Podrute passes. You can reach Pusta Bela by following a marked path from the village of Bela (near the fish farm). The fortress is about a 15-minute walk away. 

Belski Dol Spring


The source in Belski dol is a popular place where you can drink or fill your bottles with spring water. It is located in a wooded canyon through which a road passes. Cyclists, hikers, travelers, and locals from nearby villages often stop here. People from more distant places also come to the source in Belski dol to supply themselves with clean spring water.

Peak Čevo

Cevo is the easternmost and most prominent peak of Ivanščica. It is 562 meters high. It is quite gentle from the south side, but from the north side, it is so steep that rocks have appeared in several places. Because of its characteristic sharp peak, it is also called Zagorski Klek. There is an interesting hiking trail Završje Podbelsko - Pusta Bela - Cevo that takes 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Belski Dol Fish Farm

The Belski Dol Trout Farm is a favorite destination for all lovers of high-quality fresh trout. The Zagorec family has been breeding trout for years, which are widely known for their quality. The exceptional quality water from Belski Dol also influences the quality of the trout. The trout is always fresh, caught for you and cleaned immediately. The price of the fish is affordable.

Bela I Castle

The Hungarian noble family Pethö de Gerse, who owned the Bela estate, built Bela I Castle in 1605. It is the older of the two castles at this location. According to a preserved description from 1607, the building had two wings, a tall tower in the middle, four defensive towers at the corners, ramparts around the castle, and a drawbridge at the main entrance.

Bela II Castle

The Baroque Bela II Castle was built in the mid-17th century. It is not known who built it. It is located adjacent to the older Bela I Castle. Both castles are mentioned as early as 1648, indicating that Bela II must have been built before that time. The most famous owner of Bela II was the Illyrian and Croatian reformer, Baron Metel Ožegović.

The Mysterious Fortress of Gradišće

On the hill Cukovec near Margečan, the remains of the mysterious fortress Gradišče can be found. The fortress is located at 330 meters above sea level, in a strategically good position as it offers a view over the narrow valley of Bednja at the foot. It is not yet known who and when built this fortress.

Devil's Chair

Devil's Chair is the name for the unusually shaped rock on the hill Gradišće near Margečan. The rock has the shape of a chair where you can comfortably sit back and enjoy the view that unfolds from here. The view is truly magnificent, with the valley winding through which the Bednja River and the mountain Ivanščica.

Ivanec Bays

Ivanec ponds were created by the collapse of mining pits. Today, they are a popular fishing spot visited by fishing enthusiasts from the country and abroad. Next to the ponds, the Ivanec Fishing Association has built a fishing lodge with a capacity of 60 seats and 200 seats on an outdoor covered terrace. The Ivanec region is rich in freshwater fish. The Ivanec Fishing Association manages the waters in this area.

Ivanec Lakes

Ivanec Lakes, known as Jarki, consist of 4 lakes and are located just a few minutes from the center of Ivanec. The lakes are surrounded by forest, with a view overlooking the chapel of St. Spirit in Prigorje and the mountain of Ivanščica. Around the lakes, there are pathways and trails, making this a favorite urban walking area and a popular running route.

Rest Area Šumi

Shumi Rest Area is one of the most beautiful places in Ivanci. It is a large mountain meadow surrounded by a forest with the Shumi stream flowing through it. What is particularly impressive are the waterfalls. The main waterfall is over 2 meters high, and there are several smaller waterfalls as well. Shumi is a popular spot for hikers and mountaineers who also like to camp in tents here. 

Friščić's Mill - Watermill


Due to its moderate slope, the Bistrica stream is ideal for powering watermills. There used to be as many as 19 of them on the Bistrica. Watermills, small private mills, ground grain for the needs of the wider Ivanec region. One of them is Friščić's mill in Prigorec.

Prigorec

Prigorec is a picturesque place located above Ivanec, at the foot of Ivančica. Around 460 residents live in Prigorec. Many hikers and excursionists pass through Prigorec on their way to the top of Ivančica. At the beginning of Prigorec and after the water mill, there is an intersection that is important if you are planning to go to Ivančica.

Rest area and drinking water spring - Zgano Vino

The Žgano vino Rest Area is the starting point for the ascent to Mount Ivanščica if you are hiking along the trails Preko Konja and Preko Mrzljaka. From here, there is also a 10 km long gravel road leading to the summit of Ivanščica. Žgano vino is the name of the drinking water source where you can fill up and drink water. 

Mount Ivanščica 1060m - Pasarić house mountain lodge


At the top of Ivanščica is the Mountaineering home Pasarićeva house. It consists of two dining rooms, a kitchen, a pantry, and a hallway. In the attic, there are two bedrooms for a total of 32 people. All rooms are heated, and the house is supplied with spring water and connected to the electrical grid.
